SUSAN OROSZ, PhD, DVM, Dipl ABVP (Avian) & Dipl ECZM (Avian)
Dr Susan Orosz is a Toledo native who grew up in Point Place and at her grandmothers farm nearby, tending rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, and her pony, Lightning. Having practiced in California and Tennessee, she has returned to the Toledo area, where she now lives on a small environmentally friendly family farm. "Dr O" as she is known, has her undergraduate degree in Biology from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. She received her PhD in neuroanatomy from The University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 1980 and her DVM from The Ohio State University in 1984. While in her 4th year at Ohio State, she did an anatomical study of the bones of the California Condor while working at the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. That study was turned into a text book detailing the surgical anatomy necessary for the fracture repair of birds of all types. This textbook won both national and international awards as the Best technical publication for the year.
During her 14 year tenure at the University, she trained vet students, residents and other veterinarians in the medicine and surgery of exotic animals. She continues to be sought after to lecture in the United States and Europe about avian and exotic animal medicine. Dr O is one of only 4 veterinarians from the United States board certified in avian medicine here (through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, ABVP) and in Europe (through the European College of Zoological Medicine, ECZM).
Dr O received the prestigious Dr TJ Lafeber Avian Practitioner Award in 2007 for her compassion and knowledge in avian medicine and the respect from her peers. She is sought after for her knowledge in exotics. She is a past president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and is on the conference committee of Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. Dr O has over 30 years of exotic animal medicine experience and has pioneered many techniques and the use of medicines in exotic animal practice. She has consulted with the Lafeber Company on avian and exotic animal nutrition and particularly the development of nutritional products for sick and debilitated patients.
Dr O shares life on the farm with her husband Eric and a bunch of animals. The house animals include 2 cats; her rescue dogs Dolly and Dan, and 2 orange-winged Amazons. She is constantly feeding the wild birds and taking care of bees on the farm. As her daughter suggests, she is totally addicted to driving her Morgan mare Belle in her carriage in the summer months and the old family Albany cutter complete with sleigh bells when snow arrives.
"Dr. O" is a specialist in avian medicine and is board-certified in Avian Medicine through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Board certification demonstrates that the doctor practices the highest standard of care in the profession, and can be recognized by the diplomate initials "Dipl ABVP (Avian)." She is one of only 7 avian veterinarians in the world who are board-certified both in the United States and in Europe through the European College of Zoological Medicine (Dipl ECZM). She has over 30 years of avian and exotic animal experience. Dr. Orosz is a veterinary consultant with the Lafeber Company and works with avian nutritionists on foods for birds.
